Since 2014 Botswana has been known as a paradise for elephants. That was when a ban on hunting elephants was introduced. Since then, a growing number of the 140,000 elephants have left the national wildlife parks and are now roaming areas where local farmers grow their crops or tend their livestock. Conflicts between humans and animals are on the increase. In 2019, the government decided to lift the ban on the regulated trophy hunting of elephants. The decision has been welcomed by the population, some wildlife experts and the hunters themselves. Animal welfare organisations, on the other hand, strongly condemn the practice, pinning their hopes on technology and education to defuse the situation. What could a long-term solution look like?
