Tokyo, with a population of 36 million and Zurich with just 400,000 have one thing in common: people in both places are looking for new ways of building high-density housing. Riken Yamamoto, the architect who designed the “Circle” at Zurich Airport, built a settlement in Tokyo that is intended to promote contact between its inhabitants. People like Ryue Nishizawa or the team of architects at Atelier Bow-Wow in Tokyo demonstrate how small areas can be maximised. In their quest for new forms of living, the Japanese architects also look to Zurich. In recent years, the city has attracted international attention in this regard. The Zurich architect Andreas Hofer has been involved in some of the pioneering projects in Zurich and is now swamped with enquiries.
