There have always been myths about redhaired people. The rarest of hair colours leads to prejudice and exclusion. Redhaired women are regarded as sex bombs, men with red hair as barbarians. But do redheads really have abilities that blondes and brunettes do not? Why are Mary Magdalene and Judas generally depicted as having red hair? Many redheads today fight against stigmatisation and for education. One of these is the English author Jacky Colliss Harvey, whose book “RED: A Natural History of the Redhead” made it onto the New York Times Bestseller List. Another is the photographer Thomas Knights. His book “Red Hot” shows men with red hair from a completely new perspective. Every year a special festival is held in the Irish town of Crosshaven, Co. Cork, where redheads come together to celebrate their uniqueness.
