Going on safari in Africa is at the top of many European tourists’ wish lists. While a hundred years ago this was the reserve of a privileged few, it is much more attainable nowadays. Those who can afford to book an exclusive lodge with a personal safari guide can enjoy the experience in comfort. Those on a more modest budget, however, can also spend an unforgettable few days tracking the animals in their own car. Sharing the paths and trails in the Kruger National Park with buffalo, lions and elephants is what going on safari in the original sense of the word really means: embarking on a journey. The guides, meanwhile, have to complete several months of training to learn how to deal with danger and what the art of tracking is all about.
