For a long time, Ireland was seen as a bastion of the repressive, ultra-Catholic Church in Europe. Because the Church had enjoyed special status in the constitution for many decades, it was very powerful. It dictated people’s views on sexuality, diversity and morals. When various scandals and cases of abuse came to light in the 1990s, Irish people began to drift away from the Church. In recent years, Irish society has undergone many changes – or so it seemed from the outside. Ireland was the first state in the world to enshrine the right to homosexual marriage in its constitution – while at the same time it was the last state in Europe to legalise abortion. Have the Irish truly freed themselves from the hold of the Catholic Church?
