Russian president Vladimir Putin owns a dacha; Stalin died at his dacha. Self-builds or multi-million rouble palaces, the second homes where Russians spend their summers, are as much a part of their culture as are the language, the orthodox church and vodka. Visiting their dachas is the best way to get close to Russians. That is where they speak freely, about their history, and even about politics and today’s frosty relationship between the former tsardom and the West. How do Russians view President Vladimir Putin, seen by the West as a dictator and aggressor, and why do they feel that Westerners are constantly attacking them?
